It was a summer night. Tenali Raman and his wife were near to hit the bed, he heard a rustling sound of leaves from outside. There was no wind blowing. Tenali was curious and hence decided to analyze. He went closure to the bushes and heard two people talking.
He heard them saying
"All folks within the market were talking about his smartness and the way the king has been showering him with rewards. If we rob him tonight we'll be rich overnight."
Tenali found out that thieves are reaching to rob his house within the night. He could get the glims of those thieves and decided he cant outsmart them in strength.
He thought of inspiration and said to his wife in a loud voice in order that thieves can hear him,
“My dear, I heard that some notorious thieves are hiding in our neighborhood. cast off all of your Jewelry and keep them in an exceeding trunk. We shall hide it within the well."
A few moments later they both came out of the house and dropped an enormous trunk within the well. Then, they went back inside their house and pretended to be asleep. The thieves waited for ages until they fell asleep. They thought its a golden opportunity. They wanted to empty the water within the well and obtain the treasure. the whole night, the thieves kept drawing out water. They were exhausted.
Towards dawn, they managed to tug out the trunk. With stuffed with hope, they opened the trunk and were immediately crammed with disappointment after they saw it's all stones. They understood that Tenali Raman planned to outsmart them.
Just then, they heard Tenali saying,
“Thank you, friends, for watering my garden. I've got been attempting to find laborers for the previous few days and couldn't find any. I need to pay you for your labor.”
Hearing this, the thieves fell at Tenali’s feet seeking forgiveness. They promised to not steal anyone ever again and choose a life with worthy living. Tenali decided to allow them to go.
