Ahalya's Salvation From Curse

Writer's picture: TalespediaTalespedia

Sage Vishwamitra and Ramalakshmana were on their way to Mithilanagari for Sita Swayamvara. On his way, Rama's steps jumped over the cliff. A woman appeared on the same rock. The woman was Sage Gautama's wife Ahalya.

Ahalya was created by Brahma as the most beautiful woman. One day Brahma declared her marriage will be decided by open competition. Brahma arranged Ahalya's Swayamvara.

Brahma: The person who takes the three circles of the earth first wins the Ahalya.

Then all the gods sat on their own vehicles and roamed the earth. As soon as this story fell on Gautam's ear, he began to think about it. Meanwhile, the cows in their monastery wept. Sage Gautama gave three circles to Kamadhenu who gave birth to the calf. He was aware of the principle that a two-faced cow would bear fruit from the earth. So, as soon as they sit down, their purpose is successful. He immediately went to Brahma and gave his opinion. Brahma was impressed by Gautama's intelligence and Ahalya marries Gautama.

Indra came first to circumnavigate the earth in the gods. But his expectation went wrong, and at that moment he became very angry, saying, 'Gautama has broken my promise. I will not live without corrupting Ahalya'.

Then one day Gautama went to the river for a bath. Seeing that time, Indra entered the ashram in the form of Gautama and he succeeded in his purpose. He runs away from Sage Gautama to hide his cheating but soon Gautama arrived and appeared. He knew the action of Indra by implication, "if you have touched Ahalya's body, your organs will fall a thousand times" he cursed Indra. Likewise, for Ahalya, he cursed her to become a stone for her sin. She apologized for the inconvenience. It is Gautama who knows this is really not her fault. "When the dust of Rama's foot touches you, you will be saved". said Gautama. The cursed danger is thus protected Ahalya.

The Sage Gautama came to know about it immediately. Sage Gautama requested Rama, Lakshmana, and Vishwamitra to come to their ashram. Upon the request of Ahalya and all the Gautama's, they entered the ashram. Gautama gathered them and offered them milk and fruits. Then Vishwamitra along with Ramalakshmana set out from there to go to Sitasvayamvara.
